First free coffee, now this?

I'm getting a bit worried. Even as I'm half way across the world, I get some worring news from Malaysia.

In the old days, people moaned about the poor roads. Then the north-south highway was built. Then they moaned about the high accident rate. So free coffee was served on petronas stations along the PLUS highway. Now, they get massages?

Take a look at this!

Samy Vellu isnt the brightest bulb in the shed, but I'm now a bit worried.

Auckland, Part 5, the final

Got to get this out of the way anyway.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
Its not everyday that I take a pic of a jamban. Even rarer is a pic of a space age looking toilet. I'm serious. This jamban is nothing like I've even seen. Its not just clean. Its amazing! Even the taps are space age looking, the sinks have interesting designs, heck, even the toilet bowl you dont need to press anything. And its all slef cleaning!

Ooops, too much information eh?

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
Time lap exposure of the train tracks in the train station. Came out quite good, coz it was quite dark and I wasnt sure if it'll come out. Nice eh? Even the train tracks are nice!

Outside view of the bus station, which is also the train station. Damn new, and futuristic looking. looms like Japanese arcitecture through: lost of glass.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
This is just the main building through. Its criss crossed by tons of roads for the busses. The entire place is HUGE! And at least they have a centralised bus and train terminal, which is more than I can say for Malaysian public transport.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
What a busstop in the station looks like. Clean, glass to keep the heat and protect you from the wind. And a digital display that shows you how ling you have to wait b4 the next bus comes!

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
Dunno why digital cameras hate digital displays.

Its quite accurate! My bus came just 30 secs after the display said "arrived". They tell you (up to 45 mins) how long to wait b4 the next bus comes. SO you dun waste time waiting for a bus that'll never come.

Last shot of Auckland city as I head back to the subrubs. Good bye central Auckland.

Now, can we get back to normal postings?

Things about planes

NOTE: THIS POST TALKS ALOT ABOUT PLANE TOILETS! DO NOT READ IF YOU JUST ATE. You have been warned!

I got these facts from a guy I know who works for MAS. Due to privacy resons, I cannot reveal my source. Besides, MAS is already in a pinch. The facts are supplimented by my comments.

Enjoy folks! And Leong, this post is dedicated to you!

1. The main entry door costs RM1 million. There are a few of these doors on an aircraft.

There are 14 doors on a 747-400. Thats RM 14 mil just for the doors of the plane! @_@

2. Did you know that there is a secret compartment at the toilet door so you can open it FROM THE OUTSIDE?

The person didn't tell me how to do it, but this is something to keep in mind when you try and lock yourself in a plane toilet..........

3. Toilet bowls costs US$70k and they are smarter than your average washing machine. They have built in ROM and memory and they are virtually failsafe. You can "talk" to the toilet bowl using Hyperterminal through your computer's serial port.

I think the Japanese were the first to pioner "talking" toilets. But that was on the ground. Its scary: 1 plane toilet bowl costs more than a Lancer Evo in "AP" Malaysia

4. The wiring in the A380 weights 1000kg.

At least it can fly........

5. The aircraft's main power supply rating is 115v @ 400Hz.

Just some uselss information: the normal power supply in Malaysia is 240V @50Hz. No, its not a typo. It really is 400Hz! Eletrical engenering students will understand the meaning of this!

6. Most electronic components on the plane is military grade. No wonder a mic costs RM4k.

A mic costing RM4000?! What is it, gold plated?

7. Aircraft tyres can be "rethreaded" up to 5 times.

I have no idea what this means. Car buffs, any idea?

8. Reverse thrust doesn't exactly reverses the spinning direction of the blades. The thrust is just deflected 40 degrees to the front.

Doesnt matter to me: all I know the reverse thrust of a 747 is the most powerful thing I've ever felt. Both in and outside the plane.

9. Brakes are useless without flaps and ground spoilers.

No, this is not a reason to put spoilers on a car!

10. The pilot can't see the ground directly under him while in the cockpit. He relies 100% on the altimeter.

Well, duh! Everyone seems to know that, except the director of "the terminal". Look at the end of the movie when the indian guy goes and try to stop the plane singlehandedly.

11. A 747 toilet bowl uses just 200ml of water for each flush. Compare that to the 7 liters you use each time you flush your toilet.

I drink more than 200ml of water in 5 mins! Man, its one serious water saving up there!

12. Weight is such an important issue in an aircraft that they will use materials 100 times more expensive to reduce weight.

Understandable.

13. DO NOT FLUSH THE AIRCRAFT TOILET WHILE SITTING ON IT! Babies have been delivered this way.

Does it take a genious to feel this? When I flush the toilet of a plane I can feel the air pressure change dramaticly almost instantly! Toilets in a plane dont use much water to flush, they use air pressure to suck all the waste out. The sudden change in pressure is so strong, it can force babies to come out! Ladies, please keep this in mind.

14. ALL hydraulic pumps contains 9 pistons, regardless its size, make or model.

Me no engineer. Me no understand.

15. Toilet bowls are Teflon coated (non-stick!) for obvious reasons.

Not on the flight I took to NZ! There was this piece of waste PERMANENTLY stuck there.........

16. A metal bottle can actually EXPAND when water is forced into it at high pressure (4000PSI).

Tell me about it. I've seen plastic bottles expand up in the air. Of course, this is usually followed by water leaking out.

BTW, car tires are usually 30 psi. Go figure.

17. The only aircraft that can interchange its landing gear is the Fokker 50. This means you can swap the right landing gear with the left. No other aircraft can do that.

No wonder they still can fly Fokkers 10 years after the company went bankrupt.

Just a side line through: MAS has tons of Fokker 50's. Fokker has been bankrupt for 10 years. So where do the spare parts and maintainence come from?

18. Paint strippers can strip skin and flesh too.

Please do not try this at home.

19. When you flush the toilet in a 737, you are actually using waste water from the sewage tank to flush. This is a recirculating flushing system. Ewww...

Told you that this post talks alot about toilets! I'll never see the 737 the same way again. Besides, the A320 is much cooler than any 737 anyday anywayz!

20. Most toilet failures are caused by people throwing too much tissue into the toilet bowl.

Hmmmmmm....... I wonder who is responsible......

21. There are 2 flight control computers so if one fails, the other will take over.

22. For important flight information, there will be 3 gauges on the cockpit panel: One for the pilot, one for the copilot and the other one as backup if both the above gauges give very different readings.

This sounds too much like a RAID (redundant array of inexpensive disks)!

Disclaimer:the facts here may not be 100% accurate, but its coming from someone who works at MAS (maintainence section). ninghua is not responsible for any fear of flying that may arise from reading this post.

The failings of KLIA LCC (low cost carrier) terminal

Note: pictures of KLIA from WingFlex via airlines.net, the best airline website around. Map of KLIA from the website. Letter from Malaysiakini, the independent newspaper on the Malaysian net All rights reserved to each owners.

This is a mistake. A big mistake. A mistake that Malaysians love to make. A mistake that shows how stupid Malaysians are.

We all know that MAS is in the red. We all know that Airasia’s realibilty is non-existant. If there is anyone who has been on a AAsia flight and prove without a doubt that it had taken off AND landed on time, PM me and I’ll give you 5 bucks.

Well, in a response to changi’s Low cost carrier terminal (LCC), the top idiots up there were biting their nails. So, in a bit to “starve off competition”, they fast tracked their LCC in KLIA. And where left with the stupidest place in the entire KLIA to put a LCC.

Lets have an overwiew look at KLIA first shall we?
Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
Most people land at the main terminal building (MTB). The satellite terminal building is for international flights. Sepang track is where the F1 races are held. And where *some* people go to look at race girls. The nice big piece of land next to the satellite building is the ”future” new to-be built terminal. And the LCC HAS to be located at the other end of the airport!

So, now with airasia taking most of the domestic flights of MAS, how the hell are you going to get to the LCC terminal? Well, look at the map:
Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

And look at the real picture! You have to make one whole round just to get from the MTB to the LCC terminal! Just look at the yellow lines! Beocz of the damn runway in the background, you have to make one whole loop just to get there! Havent these people heard of sesaran before?!

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Now just imagine if youre taking a flight to NZ. From kuching you land at the LCC terminal. Your international flight leaves at the MTB. So you have to make one whole round, to go to the MTB, take the train to the satellite building, b4 you end up with your flight. With airasia’s reliability going through the floor, I’m worried when I come back, will I even be able to catch a plane back to kuching!

Its really a step backwards. KLIA isnt such a grand airport in the first place, but this construction of a LCC terminal with no input of planning just makes me wonder how many brain cells do our "higher up's" have.

This letter in malaysiakini just sums it all up:

Two bits of news recently have made me very worried about the prospects for non-Klang Valley residents in their air transportation needs.

The first was the news of AirAsia taking over the major part of the domestic flight operations from MAS. That by itself, is probably welcome news, if more efficient and cheaper air service is the end result. However, with an end to competition, prices will go up inevitably, and AirAsia’s punctuality record is deteriorating.

The second was the news on the soon-to-be opened Low Cost Carrier Terminal, of which there was sketchy information before and certainly no public consultation nor user opinion sought. I was shocked to learn that it is sited several kilometres away from KLIA! A free shuttle bus service is supposed to connect the two terminals, but the details again are sketchy.

My concern is the connectivity between the two terminals and airlines. Other than journeys that start or end in KLIA, travelers will need to transit or transfer at KLIA. This is going to be particularly so when MAS rationalise their routings, and stop point-to-point routes through secondary hubs like Kuching, and adopt a hub-and-spoke system.

MAS is efficient enough to allow one hour transfers currently, and even if the transfer is long, it means more leisure time to enjoy the facilities at KLIA.

If AirAsia were to proceed with the takeover of domestic services, and then operate out of a separate terminal, I foresee much difficulties with the transfer process. The time required will increase significantly, and more hassle for the unfortunate traveler rushing to connect his flight.

A one-shot through check-in will not be possible, as it is practiced now (baggage checked through to the final destination, and respective boarding passes issued from departure point). Imagine arriving at the LCCT, wait half an hour for your bags, lug them to the shuttle service bus stop, wait some more, take a bus journey of some 15-20 minutes, and then lug you bags
for a re-check-in.

In an era of increasing convenience and seamless transfers for air passengers, it looks like we are taking a giant step backwards towards more obstacles and hassles. The move from Subang with its three terminals to the centralised KLIA was a great improvement in flight transfer connectivity.

I used to laugh at Australian airports with their separate international and domestic terminals, separated by one or two kilometres. They have since made much progress in merging their international and domestic services, making the connection as painless as possible. We have, meanwhile, attempted to emulate their errors.

I hope common sense will prevail this time, but based on our past track record, I am not going to hold my breath. My final word for this rushed LCCT is simple - we were forced into making a wrong decision by our southern neighbour.
All rights reserved to the writer of this letter.

I love the last sentence: “we were forced into making a wrong decision by our southern neighbour” hmmmmmm….. Guess who is that “southen neighbour”………………..

Kenny is right to question the titleship of Datuks. Damn Malaysian beaucrats. Always destroying the rakyat. Malaysia only knows how to take steps backward, and refuses to learn from other peoples mistakes.

I doubt anything will chance, but I hope this proves, and gives the raw facts to people, that our LCC terminal is doomed.

Central Auckland,part 4

Part 4 is dedicated to a wacky street busker. I have no idea who he is. But he's quite funny. Here's one of his jokes: He grabbed someones Handphone, talked to the guy for a while on the other end of the line, and said "Now, I'm going to ask you a question. What has small balls, and hangs down?" Its a cricket bat, btw. I have no idea what that means. "Now what has big balls, and hangs up?" And promptly hung up on that handphone!

Told you he was wacky. The atmosphere just made it better.

He did a few things before this, but I didnt get it on foto. All I got was him jamming a tennis racquet down his body.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
Head in first. He dislodged his arm doing this, earning him tons of gasps and wows.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
I'm in! And I shaved my hair just to do ti!

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
He, and some people had, *ahem*, the wrong idea when the racquet reached this low.

Anyway, enough with the tennis racquet. heres a stunt he claimed he broke his bones learning it.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
He even posed for me! He's attempting to balance him self on that block with a pile under it, and juggling those plundgers at the same time!

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
trying to steady himself. And grab those 3 plundgers there below him.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
He drpooed one plundger. And had this cyclist that stoped to look at him give him a hand. Is it just me, or is the cyclist looking like darth vader?

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
Juggling in Auckland! At 3pm in the afternoon! NZ weather is great, in the noon. Its not cold, but neither is it hot! Nights can be the ice age however.

Part 5 will be the last part. Keep an eye out for it!

Na si wa wu ji ba ban

You probably have heard this Hokkien song somewhere if you listen to Chinese radio stations. Well, wa pun ai ji ba ban! (我也要一百万!)

It was hilarious enough for me to do some research, and acctually find the mp3! And the lyrics! I got the lyrics in 繁体。 Does anyone know how to change 繁体字 to 简体字? Wa beh hiao!

Anyways,

Spaghetti

And for those who can read the strokes, heres a ang-mo-ji verson, from Galvin. I made a few changes however:

Nah sih gua wuh ji pa ban, ji pa ban,
Gua wuh ji pa ban, jit si lang tio khin san,
Bo khong bo lang jai, kong tio chin pai seh,
Chiak kak hia nih tua hanh. ko mm pat je puey kee,

Anyone care to try and translate it?

Back to the futu.........er, past.

Daylight saving ends sunday (19/3). So we go back to GMT +12 time zone.

For those who have never heard of daylight saving, its common in western, temprate countries. Normally, NZ is "just" 4 hours ahead of Malaysian time. But with daylight saving, it becomes 5 hours ahead.

It somehow works on the idea that they get longer days in summer. Well, there not kidding. The sun doesnt set until 7.30pm here. And I have a hunch that the sun comes up at 5am. At least, that whats the weather section of the NEW ZEALAND HERALD says.

Wait till you go to Christchurch, further south of Auckland. The sun sets at 9.30PM!! I'm not kidding,I'm not joking, I'm not making this up. In the summer the sun sets very late into the day. Hence the long days and shorter nights.

Somehow in all this, they decided to make summer 1 hour longer. I have no idea how they do this, or what is the basis. So when summer starts, they clocks have to be put 1 hr into the future. So you kinda get an extra hour in the day. Somehow. If you can work this out.

Well, summers coming to an end here. Authmn is creeping in, and the sun is setting earlier now. ON Sunday night at 3am(!), daylight saving offically ends. So b4 we sleep on sunday night, we have to set our clocks 1 hour into the past. Confusing? You bet!

AT least I suppose its better than the south pole; "day" in 6 months long, and "night" is 6 months. Go and brush off the dust if your Geo books to see why that happens.

Miss good ol' Malaysia; 1 time zone, no changing of clocks!

Ah well. Now its easier to talk to me on MSN! And skype!
