Pseudo Umno promoters taken to task
By Churchill Edward
KUCHING: The so-called Jawatankuasa Penaja Umno Negeri Sarawak (JPUNS) said to be promoting the entry of Umno into Sarawak, apparently had a rival with a similar objective in the late 1990s.
The rival group yesterday disapproved of the way JPUNS, headed by pro-tem chairman Affendi Jeman, was addressing or handling the issue when it was clear that Umno has no plans of spreading its wing to the State.
Suhaili Hamid, former pro-tem secretary of the group, claimed that JPUNS had no strong backing, unlike the movement back in the 1990s.
“If they have no strong backing from Umno, they are just talking only,” he told The Borneo Post.
Umno, through a letter dated Feb 16, 2000, and addressed to him, suggested that any intention to bring Umno to Sarawak should be discarded otherwise it would cause public confusion and strain the relationship among Barisan Nasional component parties, Suhaili said.
The letter was signed by the then Umno president and Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad who demanded that the group to call off a scheduled gathering of Umno members at the Padang Merdeka, he disclosed.
A copy of the letter was also believed being extended to Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) president, Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, and the then Unmo secretary-general Datuk Seri Khalil Yaakop.
He said his group was formed in 1996 when it applied to Umno for approval and recognition but to date, the approval was still pending.
JPUNS has opened an office in Matang Jaya commercial centre with the party’s flag and emblem hung outside the window.
The Borneo Post visited the office and found it was opened in March this year following JPUNS formation on Sept 11, 2006.
JPUNS was at the centre of some controversy last November after it announced its formation at a press conference, claiming it had 100,000 registered members in Sarawak.
But Umno secretary general Datuk Seri Radzi Sheikh Ahmad poured cold water on JPUNS as soon as it made the announcement.
He told Utusan Malaysia the party never gave anybody permission to set up Umno in Sarawak.
“Whoever wants to open Umno in Sarawak, I don’t know at all. We never gave permission to anyone,” Radzi, the Home Minister, told the Malay language daily when asked about JPUNS.
PBB deputy president Dato Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg too described JPUNS’ claims as a “joke” and “stale news” because it was clear that Umno would not spread its wings to Sarawak.
On Sunday, Johari even suggested that JPUNS’ act of opening its office with a very visible signboard was a matter for Registrar of Societies (ROS) to act on.
He claimed JPUNS was only a de facto organisation badly wanting attention.
He pointed out that his friends in Umno were not aware of this particular group of so-called Umno promoters and did not even know who its members were.

Has Umno made inroads in Sarawak?
KUCHING: Has Umno decided to set foot in Sarawak?
Parti Pesaka Bumiputra Bersatu’s (PBB) deputy president Datuk Abang Johari Tun Openg wants the Registrar of Societies (ROS) to look into media reports that a group of people had set up Sarawak Umno.
“It is very glaring. We leave it to the ROS and it has to look into it,” said the state housing minister.
Yesterday, local newspapers reported that a Sarawak Umno pro tem committee had set up an office at the Matang Jaya Commercial Centre here and photographs showed an Umno signboard with the party emblem and flags hung outside the premises.
The news report also quoted businessman Affendi Jeman, who claimed to be the Sarawak Umno pro tem chairman, as saying that he had started Sarawak Umno last September based on popular demand.
He also claimed that the pro tem committee had helped to form 35 branches throughout the state.
Admitting that Sarawak Umno had yet to get official endorsement from Umno headquarters, Affendi said the pro tem committee members had met Umno leaders regularly and that the latter “know what we are doing.”
Johari, who earlier opened the Red Crescent Kuching Chapter’s charity food sale, has often dismissed talk of Umno setting up shop in Sarawak as Umno leaders had often said in the past that the party would not spread its wings into the state.
PBB is one of four parties in Sarawak Barisan Nasional. Sarawak is the only state where Umno has not set foot in.
Johari said Umno officials had asked him about people claiming to be from Sarawak Umno helping out at the recent Machap by-election, and, now, the Ijok by-election.
“They asked me these people are. We know who they are.” (Who are they? Back stabbers?)
Eastern Times, 23 April 2007:
KUCHING: PBB deputy president Dato Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said it was up to the Registrar of Societies (ROS) to take action against a group claiming to be Umno promoters in Sarawak and who had opened an office in Matang Jaya Commercial Centre here.
The group had hoisted two Umno flags and put up a signboard with the word “UMNO” and the party’s emblem outside the window of the office located on the first floor of a shoplot.
Abang Johari, who is also the Housing Minister, said that the matter should be better left to the ROS to deal with because there was no Umno branch in Sarawak.
He said this when asked to comment on the news reports of the setting up of the office during the Malaysian Red Crescent Society Kuching Chapter charity food and jumble sale yesterday.
It was an old story and further comment on the matter would only give credit to those who initiated the action, he said.
Umno was not spreading its wings to Sarawak as PBB still remained the backbone of the Sarawak Barisan Nasional, he added.
The “Umno office” was reportedly opened last month by a group that called itself Jawatankuasa Penaja Umno Negeri Sarawak.
Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Radzi Sheikh Ahmad was reported in a national daily Utusan Malaysia as saying that Umno never gave permission to anybody to set up a branch in Sarawak.

Leave Umno signboard to ROS: Johari

Minister describes so-called JPUNS a ‘de facto’ organisation badly wanting attention
KUCHING: The issue of a group claiming to be United Malays National Organisation (Umno) promoters in Sarawak, and who recently set up an office in Matang Jaya here, should be left to the Registrar of Societies (ROS).

Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) deputy president Dato Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said as the group, which calls itself ‘Jawatankuasa Penaja Umno Negeri Sarawak (JPUNS), was only a ‘de facto’ organisation, their act of opening up an office with a very visible signboard was a matter for ROS to take action on.
“With signboard, ask ROS-lah…if I comment it would only give credibility to them, I don’t want to comment much on this (because) it’s an old issue,” he told reporters yesterday, after officiating at the Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRCS) Kuching Chapter’s Charity Food Sale.
He said this when asked whether PBB would lodge a police report or file a complaint with the ROS regarding the matter.
Johari, who is the Housing Minister, insisted that Umno had not set up a branch here, saying that if this particular group of so-called Umno promoters had made a “glaring” mistake with their office and signboard, the ROS should then have to look into the matter.
He also stressed that his friends in Umno were not aware of this particular group and did not even know who its members were.
Johari said members of these so-called Umno promoters in Sarawak even appeared in Machap and Ijok by-elections and questions were asked as to who they were.
“Some Umno members, a lot of my friends in Umno, were asking who these people were,” Johari said, adding, “Maybe they (JPUNS) just want to attract attention.”.
The issue of JPUNS was highlighted in thesundaypost following public queries about the group’s office in a commercial centre in Matang Jaya that came complete with Umno’s party flag and emblem.
JPUNS, which opened its office here last month, was set up on Sept 11 last year. It was reported in thesundaypost that the promoters had yet to receive any “green light” from Umno in Kuala Lumpur.
Johari on Saturday also described JPUNS’ claim as Umno promoters in Sarawak as a “joke” and that it was “stale news” because it was clear that Umno would not spread its wings to Sarawak.
But JPUNS appeared unaffected and this was apparent when thesundaypost interviewed its protem chairman Affendi Jeman, protem deputy chairman Mohamad Maulana Magiman and protem information chief Abu Bakar Hassan at their office yesterday.
Affendi claimed that the group’s formation was based on “popular demand” and not for personal reasons.
He also said JPUNS had 34 branches and that it would be working closely with the State and federal BN parties because it was “pro-BN”.
Meanwhile, earlier Johari presented certificates of participation to the volunteers and non-governmental organisations that set up stalls at this year’s MRCS Kuching Chapter Charity Food Sale.
The Kuching Chapter vice-chairman Titus Chuo, who is also its fundraising committee chairman, said the food sale was one of its three major fundraisers for the year.
MRCS Kuching Chapter hoped to raise RM50,000 from yesterday’s event and the funds collected would be used mainly for blood donor recruitment and community service activities.
Among those present were Assistant Minister of Environment Dr Abang Abdul Rauf Abang Zen, who is MRCS Kuching Chapter’s chairman, its advisor Datuk Abang Abdul Karim Tun Openg, and the chapter’s vice-chairman Dr Chou Chii Ming. (BTW, Dr Chou Chii Ming is one of the directors of the KTS group, who owns the Borneo Post)
