Home Ministry’s film control division looking at this angle due to the large amount from China coming into State

KUCHING: Syndicates could very well be the masterminds behind the smuggling of large amount of ‘pirated’ and pornographic VCDs and DVDs from China into Sarawak.

Head of the Home Ministry’s film control division in the State, Mamat Ibrahim, did not deny this possibility when asked how peddlers from China were able to sell those VCDs and DVDs in the State, some in the open, particularly in Kuching.

“We are also perplexed as to how they could bring the VCDs and DVDs in such a big load,” he said when contacted in his office here yesterday.

He however said that they were still probing the matter, including the likelihood that the VCDs and DVDs were brought here via air cargo and smuggled through the State’s many entry points.

“The investigations are on-going, and it may take us two to three months to make our findings,” he said.

Peddlers from China are known to be notorious in selling VCDs and DVDs in the open spaces at Jalan Song commercial centre here and also by way of table-to-table at eateries and door-to-door sales.

Many of them were repeat offenders, who had been caught and fined but kept on coming back because the lure of making RM400 to RM600 daily was too lucrative to ignore, according to The Borneo Post’s report on Oct 3.

To a question, Mamat said seven China nationals had been caught during joint operations conducted by his enforcement team and other relevant agencies here so far this year.

Selling ‘pirated’ films is an offence under Section 18(4) of Film Censorship Act 2002, which carries a fine of between RM5,000 and RM20,000, and a jail term not more than three years.

On the other hand, selling ‘blue’ films is an offence punishable under Section 5 of the same Act, which carries a fine between RM10,000 and RM50,000, or a jail term of not more than five years, or both.

What on earth do they mean "Syndicates involved in pirated DVDs?" The headline should be "Syndicates involved in pirated DVDs!!!!!!"
